May 2012 Contra Costa Wine Group Newsletter

Our last meeting was held at the Moraga Bar(n).  Its use was arranged by Sal Captain.  There were about 35 people in attendance.  As there was no host for the meeting, everyone was asked to bring hors d’oeuvres and wine and everyone complied.  We had lots to eat and drink.

Our speaker(s) were “no shows” for this meeting.  Maria Terry, long time CCWG Wine Judge, Certified Sommelier and owner of La Sommelierre in Pleasant Hill stepped up to the plate.  With less than 5 minutes notice, she presented a great food and wine pairing talk.  The attendees were very receptive to her ideas and her thoughts on the type of wines that might be served with various dishes.  Overall, Maria did an excellent job on her talk.  Our thanks go out to her for so graciously “volunteering” her services.

Due to my very own “blow up” at the meeting, I’m going to prepare an extremely brief survey for the membership of the CCWG.  I would appreciate it very much if you all would “Reply” to it in the next couple of days.  The results of the survey will be presented at the next meeting, next Friday, May 18, 2012.  Thank you all.

The speaker for our next meeting will be Marta Ashby, partner/winemaker at Climbing Monkey’s Winery in Martinez.  For those of you even remotely considering trying to start your own winery, Marta and her family started out in 2004 as home winemakers.  Her talk for us is entitled “Clean Wine: Steps to Avoid VA.”  I’m sure that it will be great.

The meeting will be held, again on Friday, May 18, 2012 (to avoid conflict with the long Memorial Day weekend) at the home of Holly and Tony Blackburn.  The meeting will start at right around 7:00 p.m. and will likely be held outside at the Blackburn home.

DIRECTIONS:  From Highway 680, take the Highway 4 Exit West toward Martinez/Hercules.  Take the Alhambra Avenue exit and turn left onto Alhambra Avenue.  After about 0.8 miles, turn right onto Travers Drive.  Make an immediate left onto Oakview Lane.  The Blackburn house is the first one on the left at 11 Oakview Lane.  Their telephone number should you get lost is (925) 231-5365.

Things to bring:  1) A bottle of your best wine to share with everyone; 2) a wine glass; 3) a folding chair and 4) a light jacket as the meeting will be held outside.  If you haven’t made any wine yet, bring along an eclectic selection that you believe the members might enjoy.

p.s. Mark your calendars for Sunday, August 26, 2012, starting at around 4:00 p.m. a nice afternoon at the Thomas Coyne Winery in Livermore.  More in future newsletters.  al t.
