March 2016 Contra Costa Wine Group Newsletter

Our last meeting was held at the home of Marv and Carolyn Schick in Walnut Creek.  There were right around 50 people in attendance for the Red Awards Night.  The Schick’s laid out a nice spread of hors d’oeuvres for those attending.  We appreciate very much them volunteering their home for this event.

During the meeting, I was personally surprised by being handed a nice card and a $100.00 Basspro Shops Gift Card for my efforts for the CCWG.  For those of you that weren’t in attendance, I especially wanted you to know that this gift was very much appreciated.  My “love” other than winemaking is Largemouth Bass fishing and the gift card has already been spent on lures that will be put in the water as soon as “Spring” gets here!  Thank you all again.

Our next meeting is for the White and Dessert Wine Award winners but we will also have two Red Wine winning holdovers poured at this meeting.  Thus the pouring order for the meeting to be held Friday night, March 25, 2016 will be as follows:

Other White/Rose Steve & Susan Abbanat  2012 Yolo Co. Sauvignon Blanc

Chardonnay (Tie)   Bonneau Dickson 2014 OBW John Gist   Yolo County

David Hicks 2014 Red Hills   Lake County

Viognier                 David Hicks 2014 Clear Lake  Lake County-Best of Show-White

Merlot                    Geoff Linder 2014  Napa County Merlot

Zinfandel                Rich Andrews  2011   Contra Costa County Zinfandel

Dessert                   Dan Boykin  2014 Northern Sonoma County Merlot Port

                               Best of Show-Dessert

The winners above are hereby reminded that they need to bring two bottles of their winning wine with them and 25-30 copies of a one page write-up on all of the particulars on how they made their winning wines.  If you cannot make the meeting, you must get the wine and write-ups to someone who will be attending the meeting.  Thank you.

Also at this meeting Bob Becker will present his idea for a possible format for future winners to present the specs on how they made their wines.  It would present quite a bit more information to the membership although even I’m not sure if I could fill in all of the blocks!

Our current Program Committee is getting together just before this meeting and will likely have some great ideas for topics to be covered in the remaining meetings for this year.  We wish them “well.”  Our group could not move forward without a great Program Committee!

The next meeting, again, will be held on Friday night, March 25, 2016, starting at around 7:00 p.m.  The meeting will be held at the home of Rupert & Eran Perera.  Their address is 19 Oakview Lane, Martinez, CA 94553.  Should you get lost, their telephone is ((25) 957-1918.

DIRECTIONS:  For most of you, take Highway 680 North to the Highway 4 West exit toward Richmond, Pinole, etc.  Go West on Highway 4 to the Alhambra Avenue exit (Exit #9).  At the bottom of the offramp, turn left onto Alhambra Avenue.  Go about 0.8 miles and turn right onto Travers Drive.  Take the first left onto Oakview Lane and the Perera’s home will be on your left after about 0.1 miles.  That address, again, is 19 Oakview Lane, Martinez.

Things to bring to the meeting:  1) A wine glass; 2) a folding chair; 3) a bottle of your best (or an eclectic selection you believe the members might enjoy) for the hors d’oeuvres table.  With the current rain, I believe we’ll have to be inside but there is a chance, with good weather, that the meeting will be held outside.  Dress for it.

I hope to see lots of you there.  This is one of the CCWG’s biggest events of the year.  Ribbons will be handed out to all of those “placing” in the January 23, 2016 Professional Wine Judging.  I will again have a box of serving spoons, forks and the like that were collected after the judging.  The Judge’s notes will also be there. Do come and collect them so the group doesn’t have to pay for mailing them out to you.  Thank you.

Respectfully submitted, Al Turner, Secretary, CCWG
