July 2012 Contra Costa Wine Group Newsletter

Our last meeting was held at the home of Stuart and Debbie Bussey in Lafayette.  They had graciously volunteered their home, filling in a void we had in our “Hosts” for the year.

Debbie and Stuart laid out a great spread of hors d’oeuvres, there was lots of wine and it was a wonderful evening to be outside.  I counted about 38 noses in the audience.  That is a great turnout for the summer month of June.

We actually had two program presentations during the June meeting.  Charter CCWG members, Marv Schick and Bob Bogardus, plus long-time member Dick Ingraham, made a very interesting presentation about the very first 10 years of the Contra Costa Wine Group.  There were even a couple of bottles of wine pulled out of long-time storage from way back in the early days of the group.  They all did a great job and it was a very enjoyable presentation.

Our second presentation was by two young men (whose names I didn’t write down, of course) who work at More Wine in Concord.  Their presentation revolved around new products that were coming available in the near future.  I didn’t hear anything about discounts for CCWG members, but sounded like they had some interesting new products.

The results are out from the Homewine Judging held by the Orange County Wine Society, sort of in conjunction with the Orange County Fair.  For my not publicizing  the judging, the CCWG did quite well.  The results are as follows:

New member, Ron Gray, took a Silver Medal for his Petite Sirah/Cabernet Franc Label in the Abstract/Non-Objective category (whatever that means).  Maybe Ron can bring one to a meeting in the near future so that we can all see it and then drink the contents!

Congratulations to all of the winners listed above.  Hopefully I didn’t miss anyone.  I apologize, in advance, if I did.  Sorry!

Our next meeting will be held on SATURDAY, July 28, 2012 and start right around 4:00 p.m.  Fairly new member, Henry Kim, has rounded up a speaker for us for which we are very appreciative.  Our speaker will be Marie Bourdilla of Artisan Barrels in Oakland.  They are making and selling wine and equipment.  Marie will speak to us about barrels (of course) and the latest trend of concrete vessels.  I’m sure that her talk will be quite enjoyable and very informative.  I’m looking forward to it.
