February 2014 Contra Costa Wine Group Newsletter

Our biggest event of the year was held on Saturday, January 25th in the Parish Hall of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Walnut Creek.  There were 110 wines entered into this year's competition, quite a big surprise to me.  Our count was hovering right around 75-85 going into the last weekend and, all of a sudden, everybody showed up with their wines!  There were right around 90 people that showed up for the Potluck Dinner that evening and a good time was had by all.

The event couldn't have happened without all of the volunteers that showed up to make the event a success.  Thanks to everyone for rolling up their sleeves and showing up on time, etc.  Special thanks to Bob Keller for figuring out how to get the dishwasher to work!  It needed just that extra touch of expertise to get it going properly.

Our judges were great again this year.  They were:

1.  Brent Amos, Winemaker at Las Positas Cellars in Livermore, CA

2.  Maria Terry, Sommelier, Owner of La Sommeliere in Pleasant Hill, CA

3.  John Bristow, U.C. Davis Enology Graduate and Dentist in Vallejo, CA

4.  Jennifer Scott of Treasury Wine Enterprises Global, Walnut Creek, CA

5.  Greg Baiocchi of Baiocchi Vineyards & Winery, Somerset, CA with Tasting Room in Sutter Creek, CA

6.  Phil Long, Owner/Winemaker at Longevity Wines in Livermore, CA

7.  Meghann Pine, Sommelier, Pleasanton, CA

8.  Lance Bellamy, GM of The Walnut Creek Yacht Club Restaurant

9.  Tom Anders, CCWG Member & VP, Scott Laboratories, Petaluma, CA (Last minute substitute for which we are grateful)

You all have my permission to boycott Nottingham Cellars in Livermore.  Collin Cranor went fishing in Cabo on us last year and this year, even with a Wednesday reminder email, simply forgot that he had a commitment with us.  He is no longer on my list of possible judges.

Here are the winners selected by those fine, professional wine judges:

WineMaker Magazine of Manchester Center, VT is hosting the 2014 WineMaker International Amateur Wine Competition that will be held April 11-13, 2014.  The entry deadline though is March 7, 2014.  CCWG Member, Mike Orton, of The Valley Vintner in Livermore is offering to ship your entries for FREE  to this years' competition.  You need to pull out a current issue of the magazine or go online, fill out the Entry Form, write out a check for $25.00 per entry and do one of the following:

     1. Deliver the entries to The Valley Vintner, 5963 Graham Ct., Unit #D, Livermore (inside of the Eckert Estates Tasting Room).  They're open only on Saturday and Sunday from Noon until 5 p.m.
     2. Bring your Entry Form, check and wine entry to the next meeting on Friday, February 28th and they will be delivered to the Valley Vintner the next day for shipment ASAP.
Our next meeting is one of the "biggies" of the year.  It will be held on Friday night, February 28, 2014.  This will be the Red Wine Winners Award meeting.  Ribbons for First, Second, Third and Honorable Mention, plus the Best of Show Red Wine medal will be handed out.  A highlight though, is that each of the First Place in each category winners will be bringing two bottles of their winning wine to pass around while they make a short presentation, with handout, on how the wine was made.  Information such as where the grapes were purchased, how much they cost, what was the Brix, pH, TA, Yeast, Nutrients, Malolactic Culture, Oak Treatment, etc. will be presented at this meeting.  There will be nine First Place wines poured this evening and they will be in the following order:
    1.  Zinfandel - Lisa Anderson
    2.  Other Red Varietals - Petit Verdot - Rich Eber
    3.  Cabernet Sauvignon-Bay Area - Al Turner
    4.  Cabernet Sauvignon-North Counties- Donna Guedon
    5.  Meritage - Donna Guedon
    6.  Other Red Blends - Charbono Blend Bill Rose
    7.  Syrah - Donna Guedon
    8.  Petite Sirah - Donna Guedon
    9.  Sangiovese - David Hicks -BEST OF SHOW - RED

On Friday night, March 28, 2014, there will be 3 White Wines, 1 Red Wine (Merlot) and 1 Fruit/Dessert wine poured and discussed.  Mark your calendar

I delivered 7 cases of wine to the Contra Costa Interfaith Housing office on Tuesday, February 28, 2014.  Those wines are for their Red Boots-No Place Like Home charity dinner that was held on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at the Contra Costa Country Club in Pleasant Hill.  Thank you all for being so very generous in donating your wines to this worthy organization.

Our next meeting will be held in the Parish Hall of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Walnut Creek. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. with the start of the pouring of the First Place wines occurring at around 7:30 p.m.  As there is no actual "Host" or "Hostess" for this meeting, the attendees are all being asked to bring along a small Saran Wrapped paper plate of hors d'oeuvres for all to enjoy.  I will be bringing 6 bottles of wine for that table that were "left over" from our judging as we only ended up with 9 judges (3 panels of 3 judges each).  If you would, please bring a bottle of your best for that table plus a wine glass for sampling those winning wines.

DIRECTIONS:  From Northern Highway 680, take the North Main St. exit.  EXIT 47 toward Walnut Creek.  Take the North Main St. SOUTH ramp.  Merge onto N. p.s. if anyone is interested in looking at my 20 pound Azul (3 Bar) Peacock Bass caught on the Jufari River, a tributary of the Rio Negro River, in Brazil, I'm attaching a picture for your perusal.  I'll have pictures of my other four 10 pound plus fish at the next meeting.
