February 2013 Contra Costa Wine Group Newsletter

There were 88 wine entries placed into 12 different categories this year in the 35th Annual Contra Costa Wine Group Professional Wine Judging and Potluck Dinner.  We had a little difficulty with judges this year, ending up with three panels of three for a total of nine judges.

Our professional judges were as follows:

1)                  Tom Coyne, longtime CCWG member and owner of the Thomas Coyne Winery in Livermore

2)                Phil Long, first time judge and owner/winemaker at Longevity Wines in Livermore

3)                Jim Waltz, many times a former judge of ours, a quite late fill-in for us, and has helped out at Concannon Vineyards for many different events over the years.  Thanks Jim

4)                Jennifer Scott, former wine judge for us and Luxury Brand Manager for California with Ste. Michelle Wine Estates

5)                Maria Terry, former wine judge for us, Certified Sommelier and owner of La Sommelierre in Pleasant Hill

6)                Brent Amos, former wine judge for us and brand new Winemaker at Las Positas Vineyards in Livermore

7)                Dave Everett, CCWG Honorary member and former wine judge for us, and Professor of Viticulture and Winery Technology at Las Positas College in Livermore

8)                John Bristow, DDS, new (for us) judge, U.C. Davis Enology graduate and long time home winemaker in Benicia.  There are over 30 partners in John’s winemaking group. Recommended to us by our beloved Treasurer, Lee Wines.

9)                Tom Anders, CCWG member, former judge for us, day of the judging fill-in, and is a Vice President at Scott Laboratories in Petaluma.  Thanks Tom, very much.

I understand that CCWG member Donna Guedon filled in ably until Tom was called and showed up.  Thank you very much Donna.

My thanks go out to all of these judges.  Without your valuable services, this event would not have the importance for us that is does.  Home winemakers really do want to know how to go about improving their wines.

We, again, had 12 categories but actually had 17 First Place winners this year due to ties. The final results of our judging are listed below:

The Potluck Dinner that evening had 85 people signed up to attend.  Our Wine Czar, Bonneau Dickson, told me that he counted 71 noses but couldn’t rely upon it as, of course, people were constantly moving around.  If our 36th Annual event next year doesn’t have a substantially higher total, the Contra Costa Wine Group will want to seriously consider not having a dinner that night.  We could then rent the hall from only 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. instead of the current 8 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. for a substantial savings.  The Parish Hall cost us $650.00 to rent this year.  We might even be able to lower our dues.

Thank you to all of you that helped out at the Parish Hall this year.  As you could see, this event couldn’t happen without your support.  Thanks also to Josie Fike for again compiling the list of dinner attendees to help us in our planning.  Next year, everybody call in sooner, OK?

As the split between White/Fruit/Dessert versus Reds was 5 versus 12, I’ve decided to mix things up a bit for our next meeting in Livermore on Saturday, February 23, 2013 starting at 3:00 p.m.

Here is the pouring order of the First Place wines at that meeting:

     1) Chardonnay  Lisa Anderson   2011 Quail Hill Sonoma County Chardonnay

     2) Chardonnay Marv Schick 2012 Maison Schick-Sonoma County Belford Blanc Chardonnay

     3) Other White/Rose’  Mike Orton 2011 Livermore Viognier-BEST OF SHOW-WHITE

     4) Non-Traditional Red Blends-Other  Al Turner & Dan Manoukian 2010 Calif. Red Table Wine

     5) Rhone Varietals & Blends  SharonOrton  2011 Livermore GSM

     6) Syrah  Tom Warriner 2011 Contra Costa County Bon Syrah

     7) Fruit/Dessert  Tom Anders  NV Napa Valley Banbury Chocolate Port

     8) Fruit/Dessert  Tom Anders NV Napa Valley Banbury Sherry-BEST OF SHOW-FRUIT/DESSERT  (Tom-Half Bottles OK)

These individuals now need to prepare a one page summary on how their First Place wine was made for handing out at the meeting.  Also, if you find yourself unable to attend the meeting, you’ve got to find a way to get two bottles of your winning wine to the meeting!  Find someone that’s attending to bring your notes and wine to that meeting.  This is simply one of the highlight meetings of the year.  We really do want to know how your wine was made!

The nine remaining Red Wine First Place winning wines will be poured at the Friday night, March 22, 2013 meeting in Pleasanton.  This seems to be a week early, but avoids a Good Friday celebration conflict on the 29th.

The next meeting will be held at the home of Mike & Sharon Orton, 2311 Vintage Lane, Livermore.  Again, the meeting will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2013 starting at 3:00 p.m.

DIRECTIONS:  You need to be able to get to I-580 heading East toward Stockton.  Take Exit 51 in Livermore, CA-84/Isabel Ave. and turn right onto Isabel Ave.  After 2.7 miles, turn left onto Concannon Blvd.  Go another 2.1 miles on Concannon Blvd. to Arroyo Rd. and turn left.  Take the very first right onto Bess Ave. and then take the first left onto Vintage Lane.  After about 0.2 mile, the Orton home will be on your right.  Their address again is 2311 Vintage Lane.  Should you get lost, their telephone number is (925) 961-1192.

Please bring a folding chair, a bottle of your best for the Hors D’oeuvres table (or an eclectic selection that you feel people might enjoy).  Don’t forget to bring a wine glass!

An incentive to attend this meeting will be that all of the awards for the categories listed above will be handed out at the meeting.  On top of that, all of the judge’s notes on the scoring sheets for all 88 entries will be available at that time.  The more awards and notes that are picked up, the lower our mailing costs will be in late March after the March meeting.

I am still in need of a family to host the 2013 Nouveau Night meeting on Friday night, December 6, 2013.  We need a large home and for that, the CCWG provides a $150 stipend for your time, trouble and hors d’oeuvres.  Please give me a call if you think that you can help us out.  Thank you.  Very nicely, all of the other months are now covered.  Thanks again.
