April 2017 Contra Costa Wine Group Newsletter
Our last meeting was one of the largest (Non-Potluck) ever held by the
Contra Costa Wine Group. Our hostess counted noses for me and ended up with a count of 69 with the
caveat that it was quite likely she missed a nose or two.
Our hostess was Michelle Beason whose home is in the hills of Walnut
She laid out a terrific spread of hors d’oeuvres for the meeting which
was greatly appreciated by all of those in attendance. We’d like the thank Michelle for hosting this lively
The last meeting was the Awards Night for the Red Wine winners from our
January 21, 2017 Professional Wine Judging. There were 9 categories and 9 different winners. That, to me, shows just how far the CCWG has come in improving our
winemaking skills. All 9 winners were in attendance, had their required 2 bottles of the
winner with them, along with a one page handout on how they made their winning
All in all it was an extremely successful meeting. You should
‘a been there!
One of the tasks that I have to perform after the two awards nights is to
prepare and mail any wine judge’s notes and/or ribbons that hadn’t been collected during
these two meetings. I’m quite happy to report that the CCWG actually spent less than $10.00
this year on additional mailing expenses. That’s a very nice, low figure!
The speaker at our next meeting will be Mr. Shea Comfort, the Yeast
He is a long time consultant for the Lallemande Yeast Company. He last spoke to us at the then home of Mike and Patty Mowry, just before
they sold their home. His presentation was so well enjoyed by the group that he is being asked
to come and speak to us again. There simply wasn’t enough time for
Shea to break the surface last time. We’re hoping this time to learn more on
the later processes in wine adjusting. He may
present anything that he feels is worth discussing after the initial yeast and bacteria
period. Then he may talk some on dealing with
"wine disorders" i.e. acetobacter, hydrogen sulfide etc.
Our thanks go out to Tom Olson and/or the Program Committee for lining up
Shea as our speaker for the evening.
The meeting will be held on
Friday night, April 28,
2017 at the home of Stuart and Debbie
Bussey. Their address is 1746 Reliez Valley Road,
Lafayette. Their home number is (925) 938-3231 in
case you need it.
DIRECTIONS: From Highway 680, take the Highway
24 ramp toward Oakland. Then take the Pleasant
Hill Road exit (Exit 14) North. Once on Pleasant
Hill Road, go about ¾ of a mile and then turn left at the light onto Reliez Valley
Road. After about 2 miles and 3 or 4 Stop Signs,
the Bussey home will be on your right, just past “My Road.” There is a “back way” to their home but I’m not going
The meeting will start right around 7:00
p.m. with Shea’s talk starting at around 7:30 p.m.
What to bring: 1) A folding
chair; 2) a wine glass. You need NOT bring any wine to this
meeting. Our beloved Wine Czar, Bonneau Dickson
will be bringing the wine to this meeting for our drinking pleasure. This will be some of the wine collected after the
Potluck Dinner that was held on January 21st.
Again, Friday night, April 28, 2017
starting at around 7:00 p.m. I hope to see lots of
