April 2016 Newsletter
Our last meeting was White & Dessert Wine
winners along with two red wines that weren’t poured at the February meeting. The meeting was held at the
lovely home of Rupert and Eran Perera only four days before they were to depart for Sri Lanka on vacation.
A great spread of hors d’oeuvres was laid out for all to enjoy. There were right around 45 people in
attendance for this great evening. We thank the Perera’s for volunteering their home for this large
I did inform the attendees that the reason that Marv & Carolyn
Schick weren’t attending that night was that it was their 50th
Wedding Anniversary that very night. They were celebrating elsewhere.
Congratulations to both of them on this momentous occasion.
I’d like to especially thank Donna Guedon for taking on the task of
acquiring and arranging the ribbons for both the February and March meetings. She did a great job for
the Contra Costa Wine Group.
I received only four responses for volunteers to pour CCWG wines on
Friday night, May 20, 2016 at the WineMaker Magazine Conference in Santa Rosa. I do know that several
of the membership are attending the conference so will be in attendance at that event. So, the five
pourers for that evening are Paul Merrill, Teresa Merrill, Tom Anders, Tom Olson and then
We need quite a bit more wine from the
membership to really show our stuff that evening. So, if you are attending the next meeting, please
bring along a bottle or three of some of your best wines for us to pour that evening. If you cannot make the next
meeting, please consider delivering some of your wine to one of the pourers listed above. There will be
specially marked boxes near the name tags for your donations.
The speaker at our next meeting will be winemaking consultant, Mr.
Shea Comfort of Lallemande Yeast. He writes the “More Wine” guides for home winemakers. I believe
he also has his own website and blog but I don’t have that information at this time. I expect him to be
a fount of knowledge regarding yeasts and their characteristics plus many other aspects of winemaking.
New to winemaking? This sounds to me like a meeting that you really don’t want to miss. Bring
The meeting is going to be held at

held at the home of Mike and Patty Mowery in Walnut Creek. Patty has informed me that they have plenty
of chairs so no need to lug them to the meeting. Mike also wanted me to be sure to tell the members
that parking is allowed only on their side of the street. Their address is: 148 Rudgear Drive, Walnut Creek and their telephone number is

for the Tasting Night pouring at the WineMaker Magazine Conference to be held on Friday night, May 20,
2016. We hope to find out that we’ve “repeated” as the “Club of the Year” the very next night.
Note that for this reason, the May meeting has been moved to Friday night, May 27, 2016, still at the home of
Steve and Joyce Mirabito in Lafayette. (For which I thank them profusely for their flexibility). I had
wanted to avoid any possible conflicts with the 3-day Memorial Day weekend but found that this was just not
possible. Sorry if it doesn’t work for you.
I hope to see lots of you at the meeting.
