April 2012 Contra Costa Wine Group Newsletter


Our last meeting was held at the home of Bob and Mary Lu Burchard in Martinez.  There were threatening clouds all around but not a drop of rain hit the patio.  Mary Lu and Bob put out great hors d’oeuvres for us to enjoy out on the patio where the member wines were also placed.  The formal part of the meeting was held inside.  There were about 45 people in attendance.

All of our White Wine winners (except one), the one remaining Red Wine winner, then Dessert winners were all present to pour their wines for us.  All of the winners did a great job of telling us how their winning wine was made along with their informational handouts.  Ribbons and medals (except two) were handed out along with the Wine Judge notes.

All in all, it was a great meeting and we got to taste some really fantastic wines.  Our thanks go out to Bob and Mary Lu Burchard for hosting this meeting.


Our next meeting will be held next Friday, April 27, 2012 at around 7:00 p.m. in Moraga.  If John Kirtley is well, and in town, I believe that he will be pouring his tied for Best of Show White-Viognier for us.  John was ill at the last meeting.

The remaining Judges Notes were inadvertently left by me at the Burchard’s home and their house cleaner has disposed of them.  Sorry.  The remaining ribbons will also be at the meeting so come on over and save the CCWG some USPS postage fees. 

Our speaker for the evening was arranged for us by CCWG member Tony Inzerillo of Moraga.  Our speaker will be Mr. Ernie Farinias, former Winery Manager, Winemaker and Cellar Master at U.C. Davis.  Ernie’s career there spanned over 30 years.  He is now a Wine Consultant in Sacramento.  I’m not exactly sure what he’ll be talking on but get your questions ready because he’s one incredible winemaking source.  I’m quite sure that it’s going to be a great meeting. 

Our meeting is going to be held in a converted barn in Moraga.  Sal and Susan Captain were kind enough to arrange for the rental of the facility as no CCWG members stepped up to volunteer their home for this meeting. 

Because the facility rental charge is $100, we’re asking those planning to attend to bring to the meeting with them an Appetizer plate with perhaps 12-24 Appetizers on it.  I would again suggest using disposable plates and covering them with plastic wrap so we don’t have to worry about utensils and plates getting forgotten.  I have small paper plates and napkins that I’ll bring to the meeting.

DIRECTIONS: From Highway 680 South: Drive North on Highway 680 to Walnut Creek.  Take the Olympic Avenue exit (45B) and turn left at the bottom of the off ramp.  Go to the “T” intersection at the end and turn left onto Reliez Station Rd.  Reliez Station Rd. becomes Glenside Dr. and you must turn right to stay on Glenside Dr.  Turn left onto St. Mary’s Rd.  After 3.1 miles turn left onto Moraga Rd.  Moraga Rd. becomes Canyon Rd.  Almost immediately turn right onto Country Club Dr.  The address of the converted barn is 925 Country Club Dr., Moraga, and will be on your right. 

From Highway 680 North: Drive South on Highway 680 merging onto CA-24 W toward Oakland.  Take Exit 13 toward Central Lafayette/Moraga.  Turn right onto Deer Hill Rd.  Turn slight right onto 1st St.  Turn right onto Mt. Diablo Blvd.  Turn left onto Moraga Rd.  Moraga Rd. becomes Canyon Rd.  Turn right onto Country Club Dr.  The address of the converted barn is 925 Country Club Dr., Moraga, and will be on your right.


Things to bring:  1) A wine glass; 2) a bottle of your finest for the hors d’oeuvres table; 3) a covered paper plate of 12-24 Appetizers and 4) just in case, have a folding chair for each of you in the car.


I hope to see a lot of you at this meeting.  There’s going to be lots of room for you and your guests, if any.  Again, the meeting will be held next Friday, April 27, 2012 in Moraga starting at around 7:00 p.m.
